The map of the Brain
One example of a Map is the map of the brain. It is used for scientific and psychological reasons. It is believed that different parts of the brain help us to express certain emotions and help us to function and think.
Lines of the Body
When thinking about lines the Human Anatomy came to mind.
The veins in our bodies to carry the oxygen of the air from the lungs, to the working cells in all regions of the body. The important fact that blood circulates through the body was discovered by William Harvey in 1628.
The unique organisation of lines on every human beings finger tips is very fascinating and also relates to the subject of lines.
Leonardo Da Vinci researched on facial anatomy and discovered the importance of proportion using lines to measure the length and width of the face and human body.
Historical Maps
The Psalter Map is famously known as the map of the world that puts religion belief as geographical fact. The Psalter map is one of the best surviving examples of a Mappa Mundi. It is an illustrated map of the world barely 10 cm across and drawn on animal skin bound into a book of prayers. The earth is drawn as a round disc split into three land masses of Asia , Europe and Africa. East is placed at the top of the map which is the religious convention. The map is a blend of biblical belief and medieval myth.
We define much of our understanding about the world around us with line and points. The lines and points let us define and measure complex forms. A map represents a portion of the earth's surface. Since an accurate map represents the land, each map has a "scale" which indicates the relationship between a certain distance on the map and the distance on the ground.
London Underground
Maps Help us to get around, especially here in London. Everyday thousands of people commute by train and some that are going on a new route depend on underground maps to reach their destinations.
The London underground map, provides a key and is colour coordinated to help distinguish different train lines from each other. From my experience maps like these are very helpful when travelling.
